I live in a neighborhood devoid of crime (didn't lock my car for five years, never violated) but have met yours, and it's scary sometimes.
I have found the police mostly useless. And scary. An ultimate condemnation. And I'm small and dress "acceptably".
The useful cop had a crush on one of my employees, and kept me from having to tell an old lady her cockatiel we were boarding had been stolen. The deal involved the employee and a 120 mi. drive, but we got the bird back. The men in blue also called me whenever someone left the doors unbolted or unlocked. So they were checking.
But yeah, those guys are every bit as worthy of suspicion as confidence. The one who scared the shit (not literally) out of me on my way home one day, the ones who didn't come when I called, I write them all off as trouble until they prove themselves otherwise.
And your place needs them to be more real than others'. I wonder how that silver chain for your cross came to be lying in a trash pile; whose it was, and whether the police should have been involved. Like they could bother. Stories.
