A lot of what people find worth living for is other people--their beloved, their children, their grandparents. That's the trick Arafat used to shut down Black September, when he decided it had stopped being a net useful operation: he recruited attractive Palestinian women, and introduced them to the operatives. Things clicked, and those men suddenly had something to lose if they died.
