I've got a weekend to write about, but I was kind of busy for a couple days and then I've been pretty impressively zoned for a couple days as a result of the first few. I'll get to it soonish. In the meantime a question:

Does the foil hat have to be grounded to work?

Actually, in the same vein, if it does need to be grounded, does it actually need to be an all-enclosing foil (or mesh) suit, so as to make a proper Faraday cage?

Oooh! Anti-mind-control chainmail! Tee hee! Chainmail is pretty. But it'd have to include a fencing mask or something, and that would make kissing difficult. Hmm.

(Yeah, I know, the foil hat wouldn't help anyhow, since the uncomfortable thoughts are from reality and news reporting (non-synonymous, but overlapping, sets), rather than mind-control rays. Oh well.)

No, it doesn't need to be completely encompassing for the faraday cage effect to work. If you've got a radio 1.5"x3"x5" and you lower it into a faraday cylinder 4" in diameter and 8" tall sitting on a block of insulating material, it will compeltely attenuate the signal. Of coure, that's for radio waves (which tend to travel parallell to the ground, at any reasonable distance from the tower). Next time I can I'll check if you can get a signal by pointing the mouth of the cage around. I suspect that mind control rays would be coming from sattellites--just make sure an opening is pointing up.

Doesn't need to be grounded, either--the faraday effect is served up by the motion of valence electrons already contained in the neutral metal, and a faraday cage retains an overall neutral electrical charge throughout its function. Grounding a faraday cage may tend to decrease its effect, allowing it to draw current from the grounding lug. In the case that the overall charge is not fixed, the boundary conditions no longer negate the EM radiation. So, if ya ground it, it won't work as well.

As for the kissing issue: A fencing mask type deal is one option, but a hoberman sphere type is another. If you had a mesh faraday cage that was three feet larger than you, it would still create a dead zone within it. So long as the mesh size is appropriately small so as to reflect, rathern than transmit, the target wavelength, the entire enclosed volume is meutralized. (In fact, there's a skin depth extending some portion of the mesh size into the volume--if you've got 1/2" chicken wire, you can probably get an understandable signal at 1/4" in, maybe as much as 1/2" in. At 2", though, it's completely attenuated.) Also, a small aperture that isn't facing upwards is fine--so if you do the whole fencing mask or coif method, a hole large enough for the mouth shouldn't permit much unwanted radiation (in addition to making it easier to not die of starvation or of thirst.)

As I understand it, the tin foil is to reflect away the Orbital Mind Control Lasers, so it doesn't need to be a Faraday cage. It only needs to be on top of your head (ideally with some overhang) because the satellites are in the sky, which is above you, right? I'm guessing from this either that the lasers can't penetrate the greater thickness of atmosphere to target you from a lower point in the sky, or that believers in this conspiracy have a less than firm grasp of orbital mechanics. But what do I know, my understanding of the subject comes entirely from playing Illuminati...

The foil had does protect against reality as well. Be sure to make it large enough to cover both eyes and ears tightly.

This is truly a question for "Ask Dr Wrong"

I think chicken-wire type fencing will work. It's lighter and lets in more light than your classic wire mesh. In addition, it's stronger than tin or aluminium foil.

But yes, it should be grounded. I suggest strained wire for maximum flexibility. That way you can move around easier. Add a test clip and you full mobility!

You can tell people you're doing 'street art' about the internal restrictions placed one imposes up oneself.... blah blah blah so people say, "Cool, street theatre!" instead of "Oh man, another crazy."

Hmm. Chicken wire is about the right size for the proper visual effect to go with a small sign reading "free speech zone", thus turning street theatre into political protest. Which, ultimately, is an even better reason to do it. I may have to pick up some chicken wire.

(I did see a photo of someone who had done exactly that at the protests of the GOP convention in NYC.)
