But there's a special flavour of rage reserved for the people who try to keep people from voting, whether by intimidation or fraud or identity-theft or by administrative fiat.
The thing is, and I do mean this in a considered way, not as hyperbole, such maneuvers surpass merely "shady" and have a character so anti-democratic, so fundamentally *counter to American principles*, as to be the next thing to treason.. (I've chosen my words -- "the next thing to" -- carefully. Others may disagree and wish to use even stronger language, and I can see arguments for doing so.)
Talked about the topic with one of my brothers-in-law last week. He's very Republican (talks about "liberals" a lot, blah blah blah, and talked about union folks beating up Republicans trying to register in the midwest, though I don't know the specifics/spin of that), and is in favor of the death penalty in such cases. I told him I'm against the death penalty (too much opportunity for mistakes, on top of anything else), but I agreed that it was just about the same thing as treason.
I haven't been able to find anything about that on the net, but my Google-fu is known to be inconsistent. If this is a false rumour started by Republicans to divert attention from what they've been doing (or to make an "everybody does it" excuse sound plausible, not that I would consider it an excuse), it'd be nice to be able to expose that. On the other hand if it turns out to be true, it'll be uncomfortable but very important for Democrats and other Kerry-supporters to expose that and to call for repudiation of the folks doing it. I'll keep an eye out for more information.
