There need to be major legal repercussions to this. Before 2 November.
It's been nearly 16 hours since I learned of this, from a Nevada-based news source. Google News still doesn't show any major network coverage of it. Reuters has nothing about it. I can't seem to be able to connect to wire.ap.org (Associated Press). It's not even on the blogsphere, at least not the bits I see (major political blogs might have covered it, but I don't follow them).
There need to be news about this, somewhere other than Las Vegas. Preferably before 2 November.
And for the rest of your post, as prophetkristy would say, word with a side of word and extra word sprinkles on top.
It's in the Post at last (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A30917-2004Oct13.html), going to be on page A08 as far as I can tell. I finally found a San Francisco Chronicle article with an AP byline (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/news/archive/2004/10/13/politics1629EDT0129.DTL). Both accounts are watered down from the Las Vegas TV website story, though. There was only the San Francisco hit a few hours ago, but a Google News hunt on "Nevada voter registration" is finally turning up what look to be related stories (I haven't checked every one) at Reuters, the Miami Herald, Newsday, npr.org... still not enough, and not front-page.
In Maryland/absentee-voter news, " Deborah Martinez, a spokeswoman for the Maryland Republican Party, said the GOP targeted specific counties across the state and has made some progress over the last few months in recruiting new members.
"We were able to overtake Calvert County," Martinez said. "It now has an "R." And in St. Mary's and Harford, we're closing the gap."
Martinez would not provide numbers on the GOP voter-switch campaign, which is designed to persuade Democrats to change their registrations. For now, she said, the party is focused on making sure registered voters are aware of the next deadline they face: Oct. 26 for sending in absentee ballots. This should be front-page news in the Washington Post tomorrow. Perhaps they are just trying to do some research to verify the facts?
