[I] think that government has a strong place in regulating and monitoring the commons and no place in regulating the home and the self - for example, I'm all in favor of cameras in public places, but think that it should be very difficult for police to enter the home.
Regulating/monitoring the commons as a defense for pre-emptive surveillance is an interesting idea I shall have to think on. I'm worried that the surveillance will have a chilling effect (e.g., on the freedom of assembly) and the potential for huge abuse, when they put it all together -- especially once they put RFID chips (radio frequency chips) in drivers' licenses. They're already openly moving on passports, see Bruce Schneier's latest cryptogram for details on that, but they ARE moving on driver's licenses; maybe later on I can write up more on what I learned from the CPSR meeting yesterday. I can see them putting them in "public" places to see who goes to certain churches, ACLU meetings, etc., tracking us all to and fro. Don't believe what you've read about them only being readable from a few centimeters away. According to Schneier, a respected security expert, they've been successful at 20 feet.
