I pretty sure I recall reading in a dog book that there are three haircuts permissable for poodles that goto dog shows. There is the standard cut that we are all familiar with, and I think you might have seen one of the two others.
One of the pages I read said that only the English Saddle Clip and the Contenental were the only permissable clip for dogs in shows. Another one said that the braided coats that appeared on poodles early on are coming back into vogue. So apparently poodle clip standards aren't to some extent.
I invented one for my old dog, so he'd be comfortable, dignified, and warm enough. It involved a lot of scissoring, leaving the sides and legs long, face and back, and belly short; tail fringed. A fussy sort of do, but he was easy to work on. Most poodle clips are aesthetically offensive. Current one gets what he'll put up with, dammit.
But I only live with poodles, not put them in shows. It's fun to teach them things, and they like to learn games. Or make them up. They should look like dogs, behave like dogs, an' I got no quarrel. Just a shorter groom.
