I realise I should read that as a "foo is the new black" statement, but...
Sensationalism is a pretty old religion, if you ask me... Probably it's older than the things we think of as religions.
(If some of the ancient Greek writers can lament about people wearing clothing with fanciful pictures of Titans and gods embroidered on them -- rock group t-shirts, anyone? -- and similar other phenomena, I think it's safe to say that the desire for entertainment and sensationalism is pretty deep-rooted in the human brain. And why not? It's all biochemical, serotonin reuptakes and whatnot.)
(And there is no "new black," because black never goes out of style. ;) )
