"Mmm. It's the usual outside-perspective problem - the members of a (sub)cultural group that are the most visible to people outside that group are always the nutjobs. Just like the majority of Christians are nice friendly people, but who gets the press? The pedophilic churchmen and the fundie right-wing nutjobs, of course. Same same for most everything... and you're right, the solution is for the 'silent majority' to stop being so silent, and to point out that the nutjobs don't speak for them." -- [livejournal.com profile] thorfinn, replying to an entry by [livejournal.com profile] blackthornglade.

Yow. I would've thought it was a pretty safe observation to make. Was that on LiveJournal or elsewhere?

I said it about furries. The problem with any group that is largely defined in the public's eye by nutjobs is that they're also very defensive because people keep reacting to them as if they're nutjobs.

Therefore - and I don't know why this is - their response is to get angry at you for perpetuating a "stereotype" rather than getting made at the jerks who are walking stereotypes spreading this evil meme.

Go figure.
