In fact, she is out of town this week and reminded me to notice what the weather is here, because the media only report on the famous groundhogs. And it is quite sunny here, so I suppose the DC metro area id in for the whole 6 weeks.

However, I notice the sun is in fact returning, and some stuff is even beginning to sprout a little bit, and I am getting lots more energy. The system is working, the wheel continues to turn. Definitely an occasion for sheep's milk cheese, even if you are not of the pagan persuasion.

And happy Candlemas to my fellow Christians!

Local makes so much more sense (and is how I'd always figured it worked a a kid, before I started paying enough attention to television to have heard of Phil). When I got a bit older I felt confused because I couldn't understnad why they weren't reporting on a Maryland groundhog (or better yet, giving reports county by county) if it was an important enough tradition to make such a fuss over in the first place.

The Irving, TX reference was just a bit of school pride and a nod to the UD tradition that it's the students' duty to get the groundhog so drunk that he can't see his own shadow.
