Abraham Lincoln has a very mix history. Did you know he promoted the idea of exporting slaves back to africa. Did you know he legally and constitutional was in the wrong in his war against the south. Did you know that during his debates he stated blacks were not equal to whites. Did you know that the civil war was not about freeing the slave but was about what the new stae would be (slave or free states)?

Lincoln called for the freedom of the slaves not to free them but to undermine the southern armies. The civil war was not a civil war since in a civil war two parties are fight for control over a central government, it was a war of seperation. Did you know that the North was seen as invaders by the south? Did you know Grant was a slave owner and stated that if this war was about freeing the slave he would quit the army.

Lincoln is one of the most misunderstood american presidents and the "civil war" and the south one of the least understood conflicts. It has been PC'hooded to death.

In the defense of Lincoln after the war was ending and the black soldiers, who to earn their freedom had joined the military, had performed so well he showed signs of softening his position of exporting blacks to africa... but he got killed before he had the chance to prove this change of heart.

I could go in to how much damage he did to the constitution which he basically threw out the window, but that would be a bit long winded.

Interestingly even with out the civil war there is every evidance that the slaves would have been freed. The need for slaves, across the world, was ending due to technological advancements. In all the other places this peaceful release of the slaves resulted in much less racism. So there is evidance that the racism the happened after the civil was in part due to the civil war, and the "Reconstiction" of the south.

Also their is evidance that even with out the civil war the Confederacy would have fallen appart, due to the fact that the states in the south had a hard time agreeing on much of anything and had a very weak central power. SO there was even a chance for reconciliation and reforming without all the bloodshed.

But don't get me wrong. I am glad the USA stayed together and that the north won. But my point is good old Lincoln wasn't the angel everyone seems to think he was and the title "dictator" was in many ways accurate.

"I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the states where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so."
Lincoln's 1860 inaugural address

"My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union."
Letter to Horace Greeley, August 22, 1862

"I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races. I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of making voters or jurors of Negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people. There is a physical difference between the white and black races, which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality."
