From the Quotation of the day mailing list, 2005-01-12:

"Guitar face is a spur of the moment thing, something you have no awareness or control over," Campbell said.

"Guitar playing is ... all about energy, transferring your spirit to a hungry crowd through six strings and a wall of amps. You can't help sharing what you feel with a look, whether it's serious or maybe a little silly."

-- Les Campbell (aka Angus McFoghat), a sound and recording engineer from Nicholasville, Ky. and winner of Mag Rack's best amateur guitar face contest. (http://www.magrack.com/index.jsp)

Yeah. Like when you grin madly, put out your tongue, nod your head, and spontaneously dance . Or some combination thereof. I don't think you have any idea you're doing any of those. But it's cute. And it's obvious what's going on. You're in the groove.

I think I'm usually aware that I'm dancing, and sometimes realize I'm nodding my head. Not sure about the grin (but I know that rocking out on a set of reels does make me feel pretty good) ...

#blink# I stick out my tongue??

I should watch more video of myself sometime.

You do put out your tongue. I've told you this. Sort of like Mel, not far, and only sometimes. Kind of a concentration gesture. I'm sure that if you knew you were being filmed, you wouldn't do it. And the manic look in your eyes gives all away. Part of your adorableness. :-)

I "talk" while I play. I mean my face makes all the motions that I'm talking, my jaw moves and my lips flap about, yet I don't say anything and am oblivious to the event until someone points it out.

So ... if you sing while playing guitar, do the talking motions work out of sync with the lyrics so that you look like a badly dubbed foreign movie?

(Okay, I obviously need to go back to sleep.)

Actually, that's fascinating. Has anyone who reads lips told you whether the motions correspond to anything intelligible?

Heh, I don't have any more trouble playing and singing than anyone else from what I can tell.

I don't think I'm saying anything intelligible. From what I can tell from what others tell me it would seem to be more like mumbling (or grumbling) than anything else.
