Thanks -- you're a lot farther away than I had in mind to impose on, but we've been tentatively planning a visit for a long time ... I'll let you know if someone else beats you to it, but a visit would still be good.
I tried using something tacky, but apparently not tacky enough; I'll try a different adhesive after the sun comes up. I don't have tweezers in the house, AFAIK, but I'll try again with a dental pick when I can see better.
I'm sure garnet_rattler can do it. How desperate is it? Like is it keeping your front door from being locked or could it be done tomorrow or the day after? I'll talk to him about it as soon as he gets home.
Do we have your number? If not, you can email it to me at ladi_lavinder.at.yahoo.dot.com
I can lock the front door -- and open it again from the inside (but I'll be locked out if I lock it when I leave). This isn't quite as bad as it sounds, as there's a security door as well, but it does mean leaving the itty bitty entry-room exposed if I go out. (I can keep the broom and snow shovels in the front hallway so there won't be anything to steal, but I don't want to find out how much of a risk of vandalism there is, or start finding cigarette butts there.) So it's not ohmyGodIcan'tsleepuntilthisisfixed desperate, but it does make me a little nervous about leaving the house.
If there's dance practice I might just take a chance and go to that anyhow; if that gets cancelled because of the snow (I'm guessing the roads ought to be clear by then, but ...) then I'll be home for a couple of days anyhow.
I'm going to have another shot at it myself in daylight; I spent a while poking at it right after it happened.
I can't help with A and B, but I've observed the process twice. Once involved a pair of needle-nose pliars; the other involved removing the entire lock from the door. (In that case the door was unlocked but holding a broken key, which made it easier.)
Oh, and I tried removing the lock from the door, hoping to shake the key-fragment out, but I can't get it unscrewed! I'm not sure whether there's some trick I'm missing in the way it's mounted, or the screws just need a good soaking with WD-40 (which I know I have someplace, but can't find). (The screws that hold the lock mechanism can be unscrewed partway, at which point the lock slides back and forth about a third of an inch, but they stop turning at that point. If I knew the right name for the type of lock, I'd Google for information about installation/deinstallation of it.)
Cross-lock tweezers. + WD40? Never underestimate cross-lock tweezers. Dental pick might do. Do I need to go buy you pliers? I have plenty of small pliers. Wonky eyes are limiting, but love endures.
i've seen my friend forexample do incredible things with stubburn locks. it doesnt look like he's on your friends list, but he's friends with some of your friends. find him at once!!!!! good luck!
