Thank you, mister rock'n'roll disc jockey, for randomly choosing to play the acoustic version of "Personal Jesus" on the radio this morning while I was reading chapters 20 and 21 of the Gospel According To St. John. That was a nice touch, and as much as I like the electric version which I'm more familiar with, I think the acoustic version was a better fit to my morning.

(I didn't get around to my one little Easter ritual (well, other than wishings the folks I see a happy Easter) yesterday. That's to just pick a bit from one of the Gospels to reread, and spend a little time quietly contemplating the meaning of the holiday and remembering to give thanks. So I decided that this morning would work ... and that song came on the radio while I was reading about the disciples' reactions to the ressurection. The line, "reach out, touch faith" didn't quite line up with when I read the bit about doubting Thomas -- that would've been almost too perfect, no?)

I don't think I knew there *was* an acoustic version. (I'm very fond of the electric version.) What's it on?

Do you mean what album? Sory, I've nary a clue. I've only ever heard either version on the radio. (Though come to think of it, it's definitely something I should add to me CD collection soon, once I find out the answer to your question.) To be honest, I had to look up what band the song is from. (That's in the "I really ought to have known that already" category, yes.)

(1) One of the "Personal Jesus" singles has the "acoustic" among several other versions [don't have my list of CDs handy right this second, but I *know* that particular version was on it because it made one of my recent comp discs...]

(2) Also, Johnny Cash covered it in one of the American Recordings discs, which is actually where I heard it first. (Yes, I avoided a lot of music in the 80s and 90s, so I am just now discovering the few parts that were really good.) Not quite as powerful of his cover of "Hurt", but then what is?

Ah. Well, the electric version is from Depeche Mode's album Violator, IIRC. (Although my own copy seems to have wandered off, so I can't double-check...)

Cash's cover of "Personal Jesus" is good, but a bit weird. What do you call something that subverts something subversive into its mundane or square meaning? The Depeche Mode song was subverting the trope away from its religious meaning, and Johnny Cash reversed that.

Ironically enough, I'm listening to Marilyn Manson singing "Antichrist Superstar." :D Go figure. (Then again, I *like* Marilyn Manson because I *get the joke*. ;) )

Thank you for being a living example of someone who takes Christian faith seriously without being intrusive about it.
