I thought it a wonderful commentary on americans that they needed to
change the title of the book/movie. :)

Not Americans. American business, or perhaps even just the publishers. Many, many of us woulr have preferred to leave it alone (and deliberately sought out the British edition when possible).

Good for you! I found it an insult for some publisher to think nobody
over here knew what a philopher's stone was, while at the same time
using the term for UK readers.
'proper name' indeed ...
