I've been taking generic loratadine because it's the last OTC antihistamine that hadn't stopped working for me yet, and still being uncomfortable and having trouble breathing, leading me to wonder whether this season is just that amazingly over-the-top pollen-wise, or loratadine had finally joined the ranks of antihistamines my body no longer notices.

Last night I found a Zyrtec tablet, probably about four years past its expiration date. I took it before bed. It made a big difference. (Unfortunately it has worn off now, but it was still working when I woke up). So I guess loratadine just isn't doing it for me. Unfortunately, Zyrtec is still prescription-only, and I don't have health insurance.

But apparently Baltimore just started some sort of drugs-for-poor-people program ... maybe a visit to a free-or-sliding-scale clinic and this new program can combine to get me some allergy relief?

Off to the search-engines...

That's my theory.

I've read a number of news articles indicating that this Spring is just awful, allergy-wise. More so than usual.

I can't decide whether to be happy or sad that it's not just me. After all, I don't want my friends to suffer, but on the other hand, I was starting to feel like a freak, being ill when the weather has been so lovely!

Makes me wonder whether this means a bad grass/ragweed season as well -- if so, Pennsic could be rather trying.

[livejournal.com profile] achaosofkittens told me last night that DC had the highest pollen levels in the country yesterday.

heh. out here it's not the pollen that's worse than usual. it's the potholes. i don't know what the hell they're using to pave the roads in the bay area, but it seems like they're all falling apart this spring. we had less rain this past winter than usual, and less flooding. fewer mudslides, although the ones we had were horrific.

but the pavement? crumbling. what the fuck.

Can you get to Canada? Zyrtec is OTC there. If you can't, lemme know; it may be that I can get to canada (since I live in Seattle) and mail you some.

It is? Glenn, do you want me to get you some? I'm in Canada, and a lot closer to B'more than Seattle is.

yeah, the generic name is cetirizine. It's called Reactine in CA.

Wow, Reactine is about the easiest thing in the world to get, and it comes in generic, cheaper versions... Glenn, what say? I could probably even get Sian to post it from Detroit...

#blink# That is something I had not known. That is something important for me to know. Thank you. (It's a shame this didn't come up before a bunch of local friends trekked up to FilkOntario.)

It looks as though others may be able to get me Canadian Zyrtec with less effort, unless you were already heading over the border for something else, but thank you for the offer.

And I'm overdue for a trip up there myself...

http://www.scriptsave.com/

There's an article about it on a local (to me) news site: http://www.nbc4i.com/health/4400861/detail.html

Might be worth checking into. Good luck.

*hugs*

There was a report out a year or so ago about a study done by the Army about medicine expiration dates (since they have a particular interest in how long they remain useful in storage.) Basically, their conclusion was that with a few specialized exceptions, pills don't expire. They have expiration dates because there are regulations that say they have to, but when they expire is basically a marketing ploy to get people to throw them away and buy more; it's not based on anything scientific. (Liquid medicines, on the other hand, apparently actually do lose potency or go bad.) Useful to know if you're trying to conserve medications.

Have you tried Tavist? That has good effects for me and my boy, who is allergic to pseudophedrine.

Vague recollection of trying it and having it not work, but since my memory is fuzzy on that score I should look at it again.
