From the Quotation of the day mailing list, 2005-04-08:

"The values to which people cling most stubbornly under inappropriate conditions are those values that were previously the source of their greatest triumphs over adversity." -- Jared Diamond in Collapse, describing how the "social glue" of the Norse that allowed them to master Greenland's difficulties also led to their undoing.

Jane Smiley. "The Greenlanders". It's fiction, but treads what feels like fairly close to truth. Good fiction does. And it did. The adhering to values that were impertinent to conditions was, at least there, in that story, their undoing. Mostly it looks like Catholicism.

i like that. it reminds me of the differences between jingoism and patriotism and what the true meaning of those words mean in the context of our current political situation. those who question authority VS those who charge blindly behind authority.
