Fred finds the oddest tidbits on the web ... as he put it, "paint to imply the existence of something you can't see, to conceal something else you can't see anyway."

"Well, we'd be lying if we said we didn't think our new billboard campaign would turn some heads. Frankly, that was the whole idea. I mean, why put up a billboard unless it's going to grab some attention? However, little did we know that nude backs would cause so much angst.

"However, then an FM99 listener came up with what seemed like a great idea: Why not just paint bikini straps on our lovely models? And so that's how we wound up on Military Highway Monday morning, watching as a painter worked his magic. [...]"

Yes, they painted bikini straps across the photos of women's backs (their butts were already covered by a black bar with words on it that went across the whole width of the billboard) so that people wouldn't be upset about knowing that the women's fronts were bare. What were people scared to look in their rear view mirrors after passing the billboard lest they see (OMG EEK SCARY) bare breasts on the other side of the billboard or something? Or maybe it was just knowing that the models had been topless in front of the photographer during the shoot? Yow. What an odd culture I live in.

Before & after photos of the billboard at the link above.

The first thing I thought when I saw FM99 was "Man, that was a really cool station. Wish you could get it up here..." Then I saw Military Highway and thought "Wait, that IS the FM99 I'm thinking about!"

Don't see much reference to my hometown in my friend's journals. :)

gaw, people are stupid. totally obsessed with porn, pouring who knows how much $$ into the industry, and then getting upset by a bunch of naked backs. stupid society.

little story:
i was working with a bunch of guys for a while. i was the only female painter with a mainantance crew at a gym/pool. the guys i worked with were TOTALLY obsessed with staring at the women walking by in bikinis, oggling them and comparing/complimenting/complaining about different body parts on the women. just totally scrutinizing them.

then the guys had the nerve to complain to my boss because i wasnt wearing a bra to work. they'd spend *hours* staring at women, and then claim to be *offended* because i have nipples. gaw. stupid. i wasnt trying to make a fashion statement, i just never wear a bra unless i *have* to, because they feel uncomfortable on me. and the guys could walk around wearing whatever kinda clothes they wanted. sometimes they wore loose, sleeveless shirts and i could actually see their chest and abs. did i complain??? no. because i'm not a hypocritical A$$HOLE like some people are. gaw.

i'm still upset about this, obviously. people just make no sense.

It makes perfect sense. They were obviously ogling the bikinis,
not the women. You weren't wearing a bra, therefore there was
nothing to ogle.

;-)

yes, thanks for clarifying this. clearly i was misinterpreting events. now i am better-informed and can move on with my life, free from both bra and ogglers alike! :-D

Well looking at that I'm assuming they're bare-assed which is even cheekier than having their tits out, surely?

America's recent puritanism is rather worrying, from this side of the pond - women are painted as sex objects in so many parts of the media, and yet it all has to be hidden away when it might actually show something

Uh, "cheekier", yeah, that's the adjective to use there, sure enough... ;-)

Disturbing... It doesn't quite make sense to censor something that isn't even there. Some of the ads in Quebec would turn those people's hair white and they'd be frothing about on the floor spraying flecks of foam everywhere. I remember one I saw that had a woman wearing only a pair of shoes propped strategically on a bed, leafing through a catalogue for a clothing chain, and the caption was (I translate and paragraph), "If I can't wear [brand name], I'll stay naked." Yeesh. The ads here are not quite that risque, but some of them are close.

For all anyone knows, the models were wearing bras/bikini tops when the photo was taken, and then the straps were edited out. Only to be painted back in.
