Amazingly enough, I have never seen Bambi (though I do not expect this revelation to be met with the same shock and disappointment that usually results from my confessing that I've never seen Gone With The Wind). Oh, I'm familiar enough with the major elements of the tale, of course, and I've seen the characters in snippets of footage here and there or re-rendered for advertising or parody (including, of couse, Bambi Meets Godzilla), but I've never watched the 1942 movie.

Bambi is being shown this Saturday on ABC. Is it something I really need to set aside a tape for and program the VCR to record, or is this movie one that I'm sufficiently exposed to for a member of my culture just from knowing the story and the role the movie has played in my culture, without actually watching it?

And, for the folks who like to know how I'm doing (or wondering where I'll be or why I wasn't someplace) -- everyone else can safely skip over this paragraph: tonight's plan is to go to [livejournal.com profile] anniemal's after 3LF, but I kind of wore myself out just taking care of the things that need to be done before I leave. I'm nearly finished ... if I can get out of here by a little before 20:30, it'll still be worth showing up late to rehearsal (as I write this, I'm already 15 minutes past when I'd have to leave to get there on time). Let's see how long it takes for my head to stop spinning.

I, as a major Disney fan, would say see it. But without commercials. I have a copy of the tape if you want to borrow it. It has many of those special Disney moments in it: the fire scene, the animals all twitterpated and the like. But if you can't see it, and you know the story, it is one you can skip. Though not seeing Gone With The Wind is just not acceptable. Again I have the videos if you want to borrow. :)

PS: the Scarlett of ScarlettJ9 is from GWTW! :)

I have not seen Gone With the Wind.

I have read Gone With the Wind, however.

Oh, yeah?

Well, I've read Gone with the Wind too.

Five times.

In Russian.

Under the age of ten.

And I liked it.:P

War and Peace
Gone with the Wind

Same plot. Different director.

*Snerk!* That is certainly true :)

At least Margaret Mitchell did NOT give each character a different name for each other character to call him/her. /end Russian novel character multi-name rant.

It's OK, I've never seen GWtW either. And I only saw Bambi recently because I found the tape at a moving sale and thought my kids would like it.

It's a good movie, I think. I enjoyed it; in many ways more than the recent (last ~15 years) Disney hits. And yet as nice as it is, it's also fairly forgettable, and if you already know the snippets and quotes and parodies, I'm not sure how much more would make an impact.

If you have time and are interested, I'd vote for watching. But if it's just for the sake of culture, I'd say skip it.

I vote see it, ideally without commercials, though, as on the tape or DVD release. What really isn't obvious until you watch it with full attention is how gentle but perfectly timed and paced the entire thing is. You may know the various components from seeing bits and pieces or from their parodies and references, but it's a different -- and much more moving -- thing seen in total.

I've never seen GWTW either, so you're not alone there. I have seen Bambi, and wouldn't go out of my way to see it again.

It's worth watching, but I'd agree with seeing without commercials and any possible edits made for TV (probably for time rather than content, in this case).

I'd also strongly recommend reading the actual book as well.

I haven't seen it either. And I have a copy. On laserdisc!

I've never actually sat through a whole showing of the movie, although I have seen bits and pieces.

I have read the book, though.

And I've never seen "Bambi meets Godzilla".

I only vaguely remember seeing the movie, but I distinctly remember reading the sequel.

You can either download Bambi Meets Godzilla here (370K zip file) or watch it online here.

For what it's worth :-)

Pfui. Let's just say I MEANT for the title to be italic. More trouble than it's worth resetting it for that :-D

Stop qvetching and wavering. See it! It's good.
As was mentioned, the pacing of the story is lovely, and the metaphors are amazing when you seem them actually rendered.
The courtship scenes (especially Thumper's) are to die for.

Actually, I found the courtship scenes to be the worst part of the movie. :)

Do see it. In fact, if possible, see it on the recent DVD release; the restored colors are astonishing, beautiful and bright.

The movie itself is worth seeing for the pacing and the story. Dumbo is better, though.

I remember liking "Bambi", though I don't remember it. I probably would like to watch it again, although I'd be fretting over what I wasn't doing while I was observing.

I was 24 before I saw Bambi for the first time, and I cried.

Agreed with those who say it's really a different experience on its own.

I saw Bambi in a theater, I suspect I was around 10. And the first time I saw GWTW, was at the Uptown Theater in DC, on a humongous screen. I liked both a lot.
