From the Quotation of the day mailing list, 2005-02-18:

"Even when reading is impossible, the presence of books acquired produces such an ecstasy that the buying of more books than one can read is nothing less than the soul reaching towards infinity... We cherish books even if unread, their mere presence exudes comfort, their ready access, reassurance." -- A.E. Newton

I've been trying to whittle down my collection, actually. Several months ago, my folks shipped over the astronomy collection that I put together in the '80's, & I'm in the slow & agonizing process of weeding my portion of our combined collection, pushing out books that probably aren't going to be read or used as references. It's not easy to do, really, since I have sentmental attachments to them-I followed the muse of astronomy assiduously for a good five years, & even now, it would be hard to claim that her word is without power over me.

More books than you can read? Perish the thought! I go into a frenzy of catch-up in that situation (usually just after hitting Barnes & Nobles).

I have got to remember to use that excuse sometime. Though my ``unread'' pile is smaller than it's been in months, thanks to a slightly determined policy of alternating books from it with books from the library.

Hmm, I have a different variation on that problem. I have this friend who is weeding out his book collection, and he figures the thing to do is send me his extras. Unfortunately, he's sent me a whole bunch of books I actually have little interest in reading. That and the best outlet of the best chain bookstore in the city keeps having remainder sales (the last one was $6/15, and the previous one was 10/$20), so I've currently got a ton of books in my "unread" pile.
