Wow. It's been a VERY long time (double-digit years, at least) since I read the original Earthsea trilogy -- and yet, by the end of the first sentence, I knew exactly where this came from.

Says something about something, though I don't know whether the latter something is what we read when young, or just excellent writing in general :-)
