"A lot of people have the misconception that I want everybody to look like me, or whatever [...] But I love the fact that there is diversity -- I think I appreciate a body with no tattoos at all just as much as I do full-body tattoos." -- extensively tattooed tattoo artist Kat Von D, on the NBC television program Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, episode aired in the wee hours of 2009-03-24 (most likely taped 2009-03-23)
This was one of the clips I transcribed syllable-for-syllable without punctuation in the entry in late March where I invited folks to do their own ready-for-print punctuation and editing to compare to mine.
Probably because they're so common in many people's speech, half the "like"s and "um"s didn't register consciously until I decided to quote her and rewound the tape to start transcribing. One could make a case for leaving in a "you know" and a "like" or two, but I think leaving every single syllable in place -- in this and similar cases -- would shift the focus from what she said to how she said it, and what I wanted to quote was the idea, not the speech pattern.
