I think I've got a friendslist that skews a little older than the LJ average, so many of you are probably old enough to remember the old Name That Tune television show. It really had one meme of any lingering significange, that being the phrase, "I can name that tune in _____ notes," a phrase that pops into my head every so often when a tune with a particularly catchy opening riff comes on the radio.

How many "notes" does it count as when the identification is a half measure of drumming before any melody instrument sounds?

(The tune that sparked this won't surprise anyone, as it says a lot more about the song than it does about my ability to identify it, I think: I heard a soft "thuh-tuh-tuh-tump thuh-tuh-tuh-tump" pattern and thought, "Oh yeah, I know what this is," then it went on longer than I'd remembered so I thought I'd misidentifed it, but finaly came that guitar "shweaaa" to reassure me ... "Hypnotized", by Fleetwood Mac. Oh, and it fits with [livejournal.com profile] simlaril's "songs that contain the word 'story'" game, too!)

It's the same kind of story
That seems to come down from long ago
Two friends having coffee together
When something flies by their window
It might be out on that lawn
Which is wide, at least half of a playing field
Because there's no explaining what your imagination
Can make you see and feel

Of course drum beats count as notes.

PS, you're missing a "Q".

Oh, I used to love that show...though obviously I'd do much better at it now than when it was on (late 70's?)

I had a moment like that last week. Listening to 95.9 The River, a song started. I knew the song, artist, and I thought the album (Oops - not so on the album, I was one release off). On the first chord.

Alan Parsons Project, "I Wouldn't Want to Be Like You", from I, Robot (which I didn't remember if it was that or Eve).

Nan thinks I'm a scary person because I did that...

Oh, I love playing "Classical Name That Tune". Once I pegged Beethoven's Egmont Overture from just the first note when it popped up as an unannounced encore at a concert. I probably could peg Beethoven's Violin Concerto from the four initial tympani beats...

I do that with television shows. How far into the teaser can I identify the show (either title or synopsis)? Bonus points for correctly guessing the season. I used to be able to do it with Star Trek: Next Generation very accurately, but I haven't watched it since it left the air.
