Not kidding. Man had hands that could span two octaves, if memory serves. Man sometimes wrote as if under the impression that everyone had such hands.

At least an octave and a half... Liszt had over an octave span, himself (and I do so love Leibestraum #3) I had a music teacher in college that had hands like Rachmanninoff.
