"By crushing local businesses, this giant eliminates three decent jobs for every two Wal-Mart jobs that it creates -- and a store full of part-time, poorly paid employees hardly builds the family wealth necessary to sustain a community's middle-class living standard. Indeed, Wal-Mart operates as a massive wealth extractor. Instead of profits staying in town to be reinvested locally, the money is hauled off to Bentonville, either to be used as capital for conquering yet another town or simply to be stashed in the family vaults." -- Jim Hightower, "How Wal-Mart is Remaking our World", 2002-04-26

Hi! I was cruising my friends' friends list, and this entry popped up. I am an... well, let's just say I am no friend of Wal-Mart's. This quote is poignant, especially in this holiday season. Do you mind if I post it on my own LiveJournal?

Oh, and sorry for the drive-by comment...

How could I object, seeing as I quoted it from elsewhere myself? (Mentioning that you got it from me would be nice in a feed-Glenn's-ego sort of way, but ultimately not important; the only one who really needs proper acknowledgement is Mr. Hightower, who wrote it.)

Alrighty, that sounds reasonable enough. I'll say something like "Swiped from [livejournal.com profile] dglenn"... that should do it.

Oh, and I peeked at your User Info, and saw that you're a fibromyalgia sufferer... how long have you had it, if you don't mind my asking? (If you DO mind, tell me to shut up, I won't mind, as that's personal.)

About ten years ago it got bad enough to seek medical attention. Once it was diagnosed (I was lucky, it took only several months instead of several years) I realized that I'd been having related symptoms for a lot longer and had been shrugging them off. So I'm not sure how long it's been affecting me, but the answer you're probably looking for is "about ten years".

I understand what ya mean... I'm only a freshan in college now, so when this hit me, I was 10 years old... around the 4th grade. Never knew there was such a thing before, so I didn't really know about it. Heh.

Oh, and in case you didn't guess from the subject and the tag, I post a quote of the day (http://www.livejournal.com/users/dglenn/tag/qotd) (or rather, a cron script does it for me) every morning. Some political, some poetic, some philosophical, some just silly.

I figured that's what it was from the tag. I'm not a tag user myself, but i'm in a very, very small minority.

Hey, it's monopoly capitalism at work. Remember how up in arms people generally are about Microsoft,? Wal-Mart is just another example, and a far more vicious one at that.

It's way past the time this whole issue got pushed in the public's eye.

Hi, and hugs... Thanks for posting that!
We finally got a copy of the dvd, and plan to have a screening up here sometime soon.
