"The guitar's alright as a hobby, but it won't earn you any money." -- John Lennon's Aunt Mimi (note: some sources attribute this to his mother instead)

[This QotD entry was originally scheduled to coincide with another anniversary, but a happier one than last Thursday: the first time the Beatles were played on the radio in the US ... but additional research turned up several competing claims in different parts of the country, most without dates in the citations I found, so I'm not really sure whether this is the anniversary of that or not.]

In the version I heard, once he got rich as well as famous, he bought her a house--with that on a plaque on the wall.

I'd never stopped to think whether the date of the Beatles radio debut in the United States might be determinable, actually. I'd have guessed there was enough folklore that the best one could hope for is knowing some early dates on which they were certainly played.
