"What country can preserve it's [sic] liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? let them take arms. the remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon & pacify them. what signify a few lives lost in a century or two? the tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants. it is it's natural manure." -- Thomas Jefferson, 1787-11-13

You have a "here comes an S!" apostrophe in the fifth word.

But is it:

1. A typo made in copying the original quote,

2. A typo made by Jefferson in 1787,

3. just the way apostrophes were used in the 18th century?

Good points. If it were not a Glenn typo, though, I would have expected him to include a note to that effect.

It's in the original, 7th line from the bottom.

You're right, I should have (and had intended to) make such an annotation. I'll edit the entry.

#2 would have to be a "grapho", since he didn't type or typeset it ... Sorry, feeling pedantic this afternoon -- hope it comes out as cute as it sounded in my head.

That's a good one! I have heard it quoted more often over the past year.
