From the Quotation of the day mailing list, 2005-12-18:

"Perhaps London realizes it is not at war this time. British aces are not shooting German bombers out of the sky, and no armies threaten the homeland. Rage has led some young men to break the law, and the police can handle them - as they did the ira - until a political solution presents itself. And they can do it without identity cards, unaccountable shoot-to-kill operations, lengthy detentions that the courts are not told about, and other violations of what Englishmen used to regard as fundamental rights. What does Britain - or the United States, for that matter - promise for its people after Victory over Terror? When VT-Day comes, will we pop champagne and take back the streets?" -- Charles Glass, journalist, in his article The Last of England.

Not exactly a comment on the topic, so much as a recommendation for future QotD: 9 Chickweed Lane from Saturday, 2007-01-27 (complete) and Sunday 2007-01-28 (complete, or just the first two panels).

And they can do it without identity cards...

I'm sorry, but that's just not correct. The UK has been trying to phase in national ID cards for several years now, in a misguided effort to gain ground in "the war on terror". I don't know what rock this guy's been living under.

Go read www.theregister.co.uk pretty much any day, and you wil find evidence that the UK is just as depressingly deluded and misguided as the US.

I think the writer is aware. From the article, it looks like he's comparing the situation to WWII (when Britain was worried about pro-Nazi sympathizers), but they didn't make everyone get national ID cards then (they handled them then without national ID cards, so they should be able to do it now).
