It's because there's no election. I charted the gas prices then, and told The Hubby (tm) that they would get lower towards the election. He said they couldn't possibly be that stupidly blatant, people would notice. I told him to mark my words. And prices went up the day after the election. He apologized, being the sweetie that he is, & the world got just that much more cynical.
That's not the only phenomenon having an effect here, but yeah, I remember the October/November thing. I don't recall an election two weeks ago when the price was so much lower than today -- I suspect there was some factor I don't know about depressing prices in February (for just long enough for me to get used to the lower level so that their rebound to the two-and-a-half-buck range feels more like an onerous increase than the end of a brief dip).
*nod* Not having driven much since my car got hit, and noticing two week's worth of price delta all at once makes it feel that much more sudden ... but I don't know that +$0.20/week is "creeping".

If it were 10 degrees over freezing (rather than 10 below) I'd just have ridden to work today

Yeah, I know this isn't the most expensive part of the country (heck, it's not even the most expensive part of the state). I still say, "ouch".

Luckily I use diesel, which is a tad more expensive, but I get 42 miles to the gallon in the city which means a single tank lasts nearly a month. :)
If I wasn't worried about trashing my engine, I'd try biodiesel...
