"Scottish country dancing -- it's really just math [...] The secret to Scottish country dancing is being able to count while being drunk at the same time." -- Craig Ferguson, responding to a guest who asked what kind of dancing he knows how to do, on the CBS television show The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson, 2007-05-09 [phrasing of second half of quote approximate -- I didn't tape it to be able to go back and check -- DGA]

For a contrasting view regarding the simplicity, or lack thereof, of Scottish country dancing, read about Scottish dancers having to work around the inadvertent presence of a bare knife in a set: "[...] A moment after he picked up his sgian dubh he suddenly realized that this was exactly the wrong time in the dance to have a dagger in his hands. [..]"

Scottish country dances are typically 32 or 40 bars long, and can be broken up into 8-bar phrases. One of the dancers in class talked a visiting friend, a mathematician who had never tried any form of dance before, into coming to class by telling him, "Come on! You get to spend the whole evening in a base 8 universe!" He seemed to have a good time, but I don't know if he ever tried it again after he went home.

Scottish country dancing seems to appeal to a lot of mathematicians, scientists, IT professionals, and librarians. [livejournal.com profile] tamnonlinear calls it dancing for introverts. I love it because I think it's great fun, and the music is terrific!
