"Were we to choose our leaders on the basis of their reading experience and not their political programs, there would be much less grief on earth. I believe ... that for someone who has read a lot of Dickens to shoot his like in the name of an idea is harder than for someone who has read no Dickens." -- Joseph Brodsky (thanks to [livejournal.com profile] blueeowyn)

I believe the sentiment was meant to express "those who are like him", ie, it seems to presuppose that reading Dickens will automatically produce an emotional connection with the characters in Dickens' stories, and therefore, and by extension with the underpriveleged in society, who after all, are the main characters in many of Dickes' stories.

I've read a lot of Dickens, and I want HG Wells' time machine.

So I can go back in time and shoot Dickens.
