"We are stardust, we are golden,
We are billion year old carbon,
And we got to get ourselves back to the garden.
By the time we got to Woodstock,
We were half a million strong
And everywhere was a song and a celebration.
And I dreamed I saw the bomber death planes
 Riding shotgun in the sky,
 Turning into butterflies
 Above our nation."

-- from "Woodstock" (written and first performed in 1969; recording released in 1970), by Joni Mitchell (b. 1943-11-07)

Most people don't know that the line about "back to the garden" had nothing to do with peace, nature, the Garden of Eden, or anything so artful or spiritual. The song is heavily based on her conversation with David Crosby over the phone after it happened (and she missed it), and the "garden" they had to get back to was Madison Square Garden, where CSN's next gig was.

She gave them the song a few days after that, when they met up for the Dick Cavett show. :)

Former Fairport Convention founding member Ian Matthews did a very nice a capella version of it that he sometimes brings back at Cropredy conventions.

Between Joni's manager not thinking that Woodstock would be good for her career and her (as I have heard) going ahead with trying to get there and getting stuck in the parking lot that the Thruway became, she wrote the song in a hotel room while watching news coverage of the event.

I am listening to so much good music on 100.3 this weekend, all the bands of Woodstock.
