shiny black surface with stuff on it

A beautiful black mirror
Bottles and jars seem to sink within it
Shiny, still, perfect
Techno decorator aesthetic
Until you realize it's sticky
Spilled molasses, wasted sweetness
Creeping across the counter.

At least I found it before the ants did.

Oh, now that's unfortunate. Even worse than spilled honey.

It took much less time to clean up than I thought it would, but it was still annoying and consumed a lot of paper towels. Best guess is that my mother didn't screw the lid on securely two days ago, my brother knocked it over in the wee hours after a few beers and before bed, and my mother didn't notice it this morning. Then again, my brother didn't notice it this afternoon either, even though he was in the kitchen before I cleaned it up. Odd, since it was awfully dramatic-looking.

You have ants in January? I don't know whether to pity you or envy you.

Yes, we have ants in January. At the moment there are more in the bathroom, for some reason, than in the kitchen, and I've had to put an anti-ant shield (a ring of ground pepper) around Perrine's food bowl in the bedroom. (Perrine doesn't quite approve, but as the smell has faded she's putting up with it.)

Also, this afternoon it was sixteen degrees[*] outside and way too warm indoors, but it's supposed to get below melting by the end of the week, last I heard.

[*] For folks who know I live in a °F society: it was a warm day; I translated to °Canadian because I'm used to hearing [livejournal.com profile] realinterrobang use °C. That is, the thermometer on the window read on the high side of the 60 °F mark, so it was nearly 289 Kelvins out, with really impressive brightness/colour rapid changes through the afternoon as dark clouds, light clouds, and actively precipitating clouds chased each other across the sky with clear sunny patches in between.
