I had trouble deciding betweeen these for International Women's Day, so you get all three.

"How good does a female athlete have to be before we just call her an athlete?" -- Unknown

"One of the things about equality is not just that you be treated equally to a man, but that you treat yourself equally to the way you treat a man." -- Marlo Thomas (b. 1937-11-21)

"We don't know what her impact is completely yet, and one of the things I've found kind of comforting about Sarah Palin was that it did feel like we'd gotten to the point where if a woman did something really stupid or said something really stupid, you didn't feel like the entire sex was guilty. You could just take it one person at a time." -- Gail Collins, on the PBS television program Tavis Smiley, 2009-11-16

I wish I felt as Ms. Collins did -- one of the reasons Cov. Palin makes me cringe in her blatant cherishing of stupidity is that I feel like I'm being told I'm supposed to identify with her because we're both women, that I'm supposed to think she's the best a female politician can be, and I really, really don't.

(As usual I'm commenting only on the bit I disagree with and not everything I love about these. Thank you for them! I hope you don't get any "So when is it International Men's Day, hur hur hur" replies.)

There certainly is a large contingent out there who would tell you that she is a worthy model for womanhood. I often wonder what, exactly these women have been told themselves to make them think that way.

Thank you for all three, because there are just tooo many women in this world to be encapsulated by one bon mot :D

Joni Mitchell said something quite like this, that she didn't want to be considered the top female songwriter, she wanted to be the top songwriter.
