Just before a party seems like a good time to mention this ... If anybody has an old USB printer gathering dust that they'd like to get out of their way, I still have no working printer at Mom's house that can talk to her iMac. (I do have one more parallel-port printer than I used to, but neither of the Macs has that connector.)

Second off, I keep meaning to offer to send you some equipment (on the grounds of passing along good karma others have previously given me) but never get around to Doing Anything about it. Maybe this can be a good excuse to change that.
If you would like to pick out a printer for you (and whomever else I suppose) to use at your mom's house with whatever computers you/they use there, OR ALTERNATIVELY if you would like to pick out a printer for you to use at your own place (where I assume you would get more regular use out of it) *plus* *also* whatever adapters you would need to make the printer it would be replacing be useful at your mom's house (so that you get a local printing upgrade plus also a printer for use at your mom's house), I'm willing to spring for it.
I guess it can be either inkjet or else laser as you think is most useful for your purposes. (Is color laser reasonably affordable yet -- I don't know). If it would be more useful to get a multi-function device (e.g. one that scans / copies / faxes etc), that's fully acceptable. If it would be more useful to get something that's wireless capable and/or Ethernet capable (or if you need to get another device also to get it on the network it'll be on), that's also acceptable. I take it as assumed that it will either be a Postscript printer and/or something else that is not just Windows-specific but also runs with Macs, Linux, and/or whatever else you have lying around that you need to be able to print with.
While I am not offering to spend 10 grand, or even 1 grand, on it, I am *not* offering to *only* get the absolute least expensive thing available. Instead, I would *much* rather you pick something that's going to be functional, have affordable operating costs you can handle, and last you a while and do the things you want to do with it. I fully expect it'll be at least $100 if not above (I'm speaking only of base price exclusive of taxes, shipping, etc, that will obviously make it more).
I can do anyplace that does PayPal, Amazon payments, Google payments, or Debit Mastercard.
As an idea of what I'm thinking of, looking at www newegg com, in the laser printer section I see right this instant 15 items under $100, another 45 between 100 and 200, and another 54 between 200 and 300. Any of the first 15 or second 45 I'd be happy to do, the ones in the next 54 (and especially if it's not too much over 200 base) I could probably be convinced to do if you said this was your ideal printer that's much better for you than the ones under 200. Above that, you might want to see if someone else could take up the slack maybe. At the same site for inkjet printers the breakdowns are 33, 34, and 15 respectively.
Note that you don't have to select from NewEgg; I'm using that solely as an example of what I'm thinking of. You can select whatever you want from wherever you want, either online or bricks-and-mortar.
And, again, if you need other ancillary items (cabling, adapter devices, a spare toner or set of inkjet cartridges, etc) for this to make it a complete meal so to speak, that's fine and even almost expected. Oh, and if you think it's best to get device insurance for this Just In Case so you won't end up with a paperweight in a year and a day, then so be it.
Oh, and if you're already set (or expect to be set) w.r.t. a printer at this point, but there's something else computer / technical gear related you can use at around the same sort of price range, that's acceptable also. I don't insist it be a printer, that's just what you said you could use right now.
If you need more information on my attitude towards this sort of thing, speak to Stephanie Clarkson, she knows my attitude towards this and can probably answer your questions.
So, anyway, that's the offer. Let me know what you'd like / what I can do. My gmail address is probably best for e-mail at this moment; I'm not checking my radix.net mail nearly as often and stuff there might fall through the cracks. If I don't respond quickly, keep nagging me until I do.
Be well, and again happy birthday.

I may have a hand-me-down inkjet coming, but it's tempting to get a BW laser (lowest cost-per-page and IME long service life) to use for anything that doesn't need colour. I've got a busy day ahead, but will figure out what I need most (disk space looks like the next crisis) as soon as I have a few minutes. Thank you.

No massive rush on figuring out what you want; there's no particular time limit on the offer (except on I guess if I get fired or something like that before you figure out what you want / need, in which case I ought to be practical).
Disk space would also be acceptable IMO, or if you want you could get a printer and disk space, or whatever. Whatever will be most useful to you.
You may have noticed on FB that Stephanie Clarkson is aware of this and that I asked her to help if she could if you had any questions about how best to make use of this offer, since I've done much the same for her for some stuff so she has experience with this. So, feel free to ping her I guess if you want her advice.
Be well.

If you have any questions about what all you can ask for, how big you can (or should) think, etc, ask Stephanie (for her experience with them for herself) or else me.
Be well.
