"In the fall of 1953, I was getting ready to start high school in Columbus, Ohio. I had been the "new kid" during 8th grade and hadn't made any friends, so when I read a blurb in Galaxy magazine that the 11th World Science-Fiction Convention was to be held in Philadelphia over Labor Day weekend I decided that this was something that I just had to do.

[...]

"I was lurking in a corner (huddling might be a better term) when a tall, white-haired man came over and began to talk to me about what I liked to read. I had just bought a copy of Skylark of Valeron in the dealers' room (1949 Fantasy Press first edition with a dust jacket price of $3.00) and began enthusing about this "new" writer that I had just discovered, E.E. Smith, Ph.D.

"Just about that time a grandmotherly woman came over to us and the white-haired man turned to her and said, 'Mother, this is Martin Gear and he likes the books that you type.' He then turned to me, stuck out his hand and said, 'I didn't introduce myself, I'm 'Doc' Smith.' Before I could fade into the woodwork in embarrassment, the Smiths got on either side of me and escorted me around the convention, introducing me to other authors and artists. For the remainder of the weekend, whenever either of them saw me alone they made a point of checking to see if I was enjoying myself, and of somehow including me in whatever was going on. [...]"

He's going to be missed by a hell of a lot of people.

It is funny for me to read this because I remember when I met Marty at a Philcon in '85. It was my first major non-Boston con and I didn't know anyone I hadn't come with. I did a filk song I had just written about Vampires.

Marty was hanging by the circle as he often did (although I don't recall him ever singing). At an appropriate pause, he came up to me (in his signature Vampire costume), congratulated me on the song and gave me one of his little bat pins. It felt like "welcome to the club, glad you could be here."

What a great story about Marty's discovery of fandom. From what I saw of Marty himself in later years, it looks like he very much took the Smiths' lesson to heart and did indeed "pay it forward" countless times. And what incredible luck to have just bought what would become one of literary SF's landmark works and then meet its author in person accidentally the same day! I can actually hear Marty's voice in my mind recounting this tale at some party or con or club meeting, down to the characteristic drawl. Thank you for sharing this.

Marty told me this story on one of my visits. Thanks for sharing this. There is a huge Marty-sized hole in our universe. He was a very dear man.

And a BTW, I think he as born in 1939, as he turned 74 this past March 17.

Thanks so much for sharing this great story! It's one I hadn't heard. Is there more to it that I could read somewhere our are the ellipses for effect. Just wondering. I surely will miss him.
