It is funny for me to read this because I remember when I met Marty at a Philcon in '85. It was my first major non-Boston con and I didn't know anyone I hadn't come with. I did a filk song I had just written about Vampires.
Marty was hanging by the circle as he often did (although I don't recall him ever singing). At an appropriate pause, he came up to me (in his signature Vampire costume), congratulated me on the song and gave me one of his little bat pins. It felt like "welcome to the club, glad you could be here."
