I think maybe it works if each person subjectively prioritizes different aspects of crazy. Just as a successful trade is one in which each party feels they came out ahead because they traded something of lesser value-to-them for something of greater value-to-tem, this approach wors if each person judges their partner to be less crazy on important-to-thm metrics. If they're not using the same metrics, it can work.
