"There's a subset of the establishment - in this case on the right but they crop up on the center and the left as well - that is desperate to believe that people like Milo or Trump have something to say. That they represent a meaningful political movement rather than just the same old hate and lust for power. And you can't even excuse that need with stupidity, a la Trump's fans. These are smart people who are refusing to see what's in front of them, because if they did they'd have to admit that the world is a very different place from what their comfort requires it to be." -- Abigail Nussbaum, Lawyers, Guns, and Money, comments [thanks to [info] realinterrobang for quoting this earlier]

DuckDuckGo couldn't find it via "that is desperate to believe that people like Milo or Trump have something to say" but Google did: https://disqus.com/home/discussion/lawyersgunsmoneyblog-com/delete_ugh/ specifically https://disqus.com/home/discussion/lawyersgunsmoneyblog-com/delete_ugh/#comment-3681936292

When a large group of people seem to believe something totally crazy, there's usually an internal logic that the observer isn't aware of.

Trump says all manner of things that don't make sense or that contradict things Trump said just months ago. But if you ignore the batshit sideshow there's a consistent theme that he's channeling: the current state of affairs isn't working for common people, things used to be better, outsiders and people who are friends with outsiders are to blame, and we should guard what we've got so outsiders can't take it. Wrap that in a thick layer of narcissism and privilege and you've got a pig in a blanket that's hard for a lot of folks to swallow, but it's a mistake to say he's got nothing to say, since his message—however hard to parse it is for a lot of folks—resonated with tens of millions of voters.
