[In case anyone is honestly still confused about why Black Lives Matter is a thing (if anybody ever honestly was) ...]

"This morning I saw the video of the arrest of John Lee Cowelli [who had wantonly attacked two Black girls and killed one, a couple days earlier]. Police don't draw their guns. They don't slam him to the concrete and put their knees into his back while putting on his handcuffs. They don't Taser him. They don't choke him.

"You'd think they were arresting a man for writing a bad check or stealing a shirt from a department store.

"And so often after we see a horrible incident of police brutality against Black folk, we talk about how American police need more training and better training. I've said that myself, but police show us over and over and over again -- with white men who are considered armed and dangerous -- who've just brutally murdered people -- that they are fully willing and able to remain calm, and cool, and collected, and methodical -- whenever they feel like it.

"All these years we thought they needed to be trained on how to make a peaceful arrest -- and it turns out they're great at it -- even with the most vicious and violent murderers -- if they're white.

"We're not saying that the police should've beaten or choked or shot or maimed or Tasered this man, we're saying that we want unarmed, non-violent Black folk to get the same treatment American police are so willing able to give dangerous white murderers."

My only car sticker is a BLM sticker.

Yesterday morning, boychik and I were waiting our turn to get into a rotary (roundabout), with windows open. A guy in a pickup truck pulled up to the passenger side and I braced for him to head into the rotary ahead of me as too many Medford drivers do. Instead, he yelled “All Lives Matter” through my son’s window as I moved into the rotary.

I heard just a garble of syllables and had to ask my son what he’d said. I sighed and said “well, I’m busy parenting.” (He and I were discussing negative consequences and the difficulty of remembering them while focused on a preferred activity.)

Incidentally, a few days ago I told a quick story of something fun you’d done ages back, and boychik scolded me for not using your real pronoun.

Oh FFS Pickup Truck Guy, I'm sure he can find some rally to go to rather than yelling at random passerby. *hugs you a lot*

It's such a weird and bittersweet but indeed sweet feeling to see that I am fortunate enough to know many wonderful people who agree with Mr. King here. I remember feeling lost among a unanimity of people who refused to understand these issues. I'm so glad I don't feel that now. *hugs both of you*

It's a sane, sensible and fair complaint for Mr. King - and for BLM members in general - to have. That it's resented anyway...dammit. No, that resentment of being reminded of the truth of the situation cannot be tolerated.

Thinking of the discrepancy is enough to make me positively nauseated.

Yeah, the proper response to "all lives matter" is "so what are you arguing about again?"
