"almost everything cis ppl have written About Trans People has been somewhere between hilariously under-researched and deliberate, malicious slander. if you see a book or show or thinkpiece or whatever about trans people that was written by a cis person, you should probably go into it with the assumption that at least one thing in it will be WILDLY off the mark. (i consume a lot of media with trans characters, and i know of *maybe* four trans characters written by cis people that don't make me want to go YIKES -- the odds just aren't in your favor)" -- Brin Solomon (thanks to Elliot Mason for quoting this earlier)

In general, people in minorities write characters in the majority better than people in majorities write characters from minorities they don't belong to.

Which can often be the same person, of course.

Yup. Which means those in the majority need to, first, recognize the problem and, second, figure out how to remedy it (which must involve getting to know people in the group of interest, but it's more than just that -- you have to know what to pay particular attention to, and ideally you want to find out without stepping in it too badly).

Having "sensitivity readers" seems to matter as well, but that would be a later step, after the necessary steps you mentioned.
