"Benefit of cat ownership

"Me, hearing a noise at night: oh just the cat
Me, hearing a louder noise: oh just the cat
Me, hearing glass shattered & heavy footsteps: oh just the cat
Me, hearing demonic whispers: oh just the cat
Me, hearing Satan chanting my name: oh just the cat"

"*Earthquake occurs, tornado sirens go off, volcano spontaneously spawns and erupts*
Me: What'd that f**king cat do now"

[How it works in my house:

  • Hear a noise in the middle of the night.
  • Look at cat.
  • Cat looks at me as if expecting me to explain the noise.
  • We both look in the direction of the noise.

Given the number of "likes" on my tweet saying that, I get the impression the same is true for a lot of other cats and their humans. (Occasionally we both get up to investigate; usually we each kinda look at each other like, "You gonna check that out? No? Okay then, I'm not going to bother either.")]

Fairly often, when we've turned the lights out but are still awake, [personal profile] cattitude and I will hear a noise that is probably some flavor of cats doing something they shouldn't and decide it's not worth getting out of bed to try to stop them. And having both two humans here, and two house cats, leaves a lot of space for "what are the cats up to now?" and even for asking one of them "what's your sister doing now?" (Also "where's your sister? when we're just curious, or one hasn't come over when we're handing out cat treats.)

Long ago and far away, I realized a) that I had never, ever, lived in a one-family house before, and b) I was avoiding showering when alone in the house because I couldn't hear anything outside the room. Having a meatloaf of a cat, and multiple ferrets (in their own cage/room) didn't help enough. There was no one to hear me if something went wrong....

I'd never realized that this was a thing.
