"I'm not sure there is a clearly defined moment when patriotism becomes idolatry because it happens in such subtle ways, but you definitely know it's occurred when you stand in the front of your sanctuary and contemplate where to move the stars and stripes so as not to offend anyone during worship.

"Unfortunately, that struggle is not unique. I can't count how many pastors have told me they leave the American flag in their sanctuaries simply because they're afraid of the vitriol that would be unleashed by some of their parishioners if the flag moved. I'm left dumbfounded every time I hear that story from yet another pastor somewhere in America."

There was a US flag in my church growing up, and I didn't like it being there once I thought it out. I recall it was ugly getting it out of there.

Or the sacred space merging with the secular for more power and persuasion. How closely have The Church and Patriotism gotten linked over the last 20 years? Even before it started being normal for person's of the cloth (supposedly) telling their flock that voting for X is holy and voting for B is basically a sin. It goes right back to adding "Under God" to the Pledge and making sure "In God We Trust" is standard on coins. The separation is better for all EXCEPT those who want the power of the merge and to be blunt most of them are not worth of respect as members of the religion OR as true patriots (who can see the flaws in a country and work toward fixing them).
