At least where I come from, a scallion is a little brown or purple onion that looks almost like a regular cooking onion, except that it's slightly garlic-shaped. You'd have to pelt someone with it, because it doesn't have a tail -- those got cut off for drying. I think you folks mean "green onions" or "spring onions."
