"They sometimes forget we don't live in a theocracy. They can be in the public square and express their opinion but to expect other people to alter their behavior to say that, for example, that homosexuality is immoral because it says so in the Bible... I mean it also says you can't eat pork. I don't see a lot of orthodox Jews saying people who eat pork shouldn't be allowed to get insurance benefits." -- Al Franken, on the religious right.

The problem is that their religion is so ingrained that they think of its moral imperatives as "common decency".

And it's amazing how, when Christ told them they were free from the strictures of the Old Testament laws, they decided to keep a few just because they liked them.

Hm, kinda reminds me of how they used to quote the Bible rather selectively to "keep the niggers in their place"...

"Never confuse human nature with human nurture"? I apologise for quoting the master fascist himself, but if the jackboot fits... These people have been nurtured so long on a strict set of principles that they've completely forgotten that those principles are taught and not inherent. Not, I think, that many of them would comprehend the difference, even if it were patiently explained to them, very slowly and in words of one syllable or less. Then again, that's my bias showing (again).

Well put, aliza!

Interrobang, still too lazy to bestir herself to hook up a LJ of her own...

"You shall not covet your neigbor's wife."

It's really:

"You shall not covet neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor."

There you have it, the objectification of women, right there on the stone tablets.

And didn't Fallwell and Robertson break #3 by blaming the pagans for 9/11?

"You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name."

They're not much good at remembering the Sabbath day (which is sundown Friday to sundown Saturday, properly) or keeping it holy--or even keeping the one they've chosen instead, unless you consider shopping malls temples, in which case there might be something about "no other gods before me."

Actually you're not supposed to covet thy neighbor's ass either. Which is something I get in trouble with from time to time.

I know whereof you speak; I used to be one of "them".

When I was young and Catholic I dreamed of turning the US into a Catholic theocracy. At the time I didn't see anything wrong with the idea. When you grow up completely infused with a particular religious tradition all around you, it literally becomes like the air that you breathe; you don't notice it. It's there all around you and you can't imagine life without it. Those who deny it are simple-minded and deluded; with enough re-education eventually they too can be convinced of what you already know is the Absolute Truth.

I have since recovered from this mindset, but having been there I know How The Other Side Thinks... and it ain't pretty.

Odd. I grew up Catholic (St. Brendans, Clifton NJ) and we never discussed turning the US into a Catholic whatever. In fact they were quite a tolerant bunch.

Lots of other sides out there...

Always a hot topic. I am soooo glad not to have one. (Well,I was supposed to be Catholic, too. Then I found out that my penislessness denied me the papacy. Or even priesthood. At 12, all goes by the boards. No, I'm not kidding. I had something like a fit of betrayal.) You all have very good points to make. I was an atheist by 5, thought some more, over 35 years, and believe that there's a grace that keeps this world, and the Golden Rule, and love. And my relationship with this grace is mine alone.
So, I'll covet anything I please. Just don't do anything about it. Eat whatever doesn't run fast enough, (miss venison). I will enjoy looking at handsome people working out. Recycle. I will basically break most commandments Cheerfully. Mom didn't raise a doormat. Nice to feel unalone, though. Warm fuzzies to all. Nice to know that others are out there thinking. Still getting used to this.

My opinion on the members of the "religious right" is that if god had wanted them to use their brains, he would have given them each one.
