I know whereof you speak; I used to be one of "them".
When I was young and Catholic I dreamed of turning the US into a Catholic theocracy. At the time I didn't see anything wrong with the idea. When you grow up completely infused with a particular religious tradition all around you, it literally becomes like the air that you breathe; you don't notice it. It's there all around you and you can't imagine life without it. Those who deny it are simple-minded and deluded; with enough re-education eventually they too can be convinced of what you already know is the Absolute Truth.
I have since recovered from this mindset, but having been there I know How The Other Side Thinks... and it ain't pretty.
Odd. I grew up Catholic (St. Brendans, Clifton NJ) and we never discussed turning the US into a Catholic whatever. In fact they were quite a tolerant bunch.
