The noise means "Something to kill!" in my house; it can be a bug, a mouse, a fake mouse, a pixie (well, I assume the cats are seeing pixies or something, I sure as hell can't see anything), a bird, a sock, a shoelace, my drop spindle, string. . . . you get the idea.

I'm convinced the critters are watching Brownian motion when they do that, but yeah, a drop spindle would get them going.
