I'm all over the place topicwise in my brain today.
Dinner. I didn't eat breakfast today 'cause I was trying to get stuff moved before the painters showed up, then I was distracted so lunch was, in addition to being late, something innocuous from the freezer. So partway through an episode of ... one of the Law And Order francise ... that I'd already seen, I decided I wanted to cook. But I couldn't decide what.
There's this large wok-ish thing hanging in my kitchen, left by somebody before me, and I figurd it was time to try my hand at the stir-fry thing, which I've never ever done before. And, being me, I didn't Google for tips and techniques; I just looked at the shape of the wokthing, dredged up vague memories of other people using real woks, and winged it. (That sounds like it ought to be "wung it", exceept that sounds even "wronger" (couldn't resist).) The result: something edible and satisfying, but decisions that:
- Stir fry goes on the list of "things I should have no trouble at all learning, but that I haven't learned yet"
- Daikon is okay, I guess, but I don't think I'll be buying it again unless I'm cooking for someone who especially likes it, or it turns out to really be that much cheaper than turnips and potatoes
- SSC-time: I'm still not very consistent at preparing rice.
Hey, I feel more alert now that I've eaten a big bowl of hot food and my tongue is tingly.
Less-significant notes: This is the third thing I've made with daikon since I bought one piece of it, and I still have about a fourth of it left. I have a disgustingly cute cat, but I did have to explain to Perrine at one point that if I wanted a kitty-nose in my food, I would've stir-fried said nose. (One convenient thing about being a vegetarian -- it cuts down on the number of dishes the cat will try to eat. But she does want to sniff it just in case, as is the way of many cats.)
Perrine's latest cute thing to do when the camera is out of reach, is to pick up water in/on her paw and drink it that way. I first saw her do this when I left a faucet running for her to play with, but tonight I watched her dip into a container of standing water then drink from her paw. (After three or four repetitions, she put her head down to drink normally.)
And several times in the past few days, I've seen her clench her jaw and chatter her teeth to make a loud-ish K-K-K-K-K-K-K sound. I've always associated that behaviour with birds on the other side of a pane of glass, but following her gaze when she does that, I can find no birds. I haven't figured out what else she might be K-K-K-K-K-ing at, either.
She's gotten seriously into rope games -- tug-o-war and chase-the-end. (Sometimes I guess wrong as to which of those she wants to play.) Twice now she has dragged pieces of rope to me in bed to ask me to play. (Once while I was sleeping, so I found it when I woke up. I think that time was hoping I'd play, but I'm pretty darned sure from her body language that the time she did it while I was awake was exactly that.) But sometimes, just as with the laser pointer, she just wants to watch it. Goodness, she is cute shen she catches the rope and walks away holding it.
It turns out that luring her with the rope is the most reliable way to get Perrine to use her scratching post -- I drag the rope across the scratching post, and she uses the traction she can get on the post to persue the rope that much more aggressively. (The other way is to get her to chase my fingers, but feline enthusiasm makes that risky unless I'm fully awake.) Watching her turn herself nearly upside down while crawling around the circumference of the scratching post made me think she'd really enjoy one of those larger, uh, cat-trees? Kitty jungle gyms? Climbing posts? Whatever they're called. I'm filing that as a long term project for when I get a tuit of circular or spherical morphology.
The rest of the time, she really prefers to scratch my mattress (slapping the edge of the mattress -- my instinctive response when she wakes me up doing that -- doesn't dissuade her, and grabbing her front paws or hissing at her just means she'll try again in twenty seconds or less, but leaning over the edge of the bed and putting my face Right Looming Big In Front Of Her Nose seems to stop her), the wooden step-stool in the bathroom that I use as a place to store shampoo and conditioner (I let her claw that, because it's unfinished and raw-looking, so I figure a few claw-marks won't matter much), or a couple of chairs that I try to discourage her from using. She acts as though the scratching post feels really good to use when she uses it, but she never uses it without being convinced somehow.
And I've noticed that one of the nifty side
effects of posting cute-cat stuff is that I can
pretty much count on someone else (usually
donnad) to respond with related
cool/cute stuff about their own cat, so I get
a bonus vicarious dose of cutey-cat on top of
the pleasure of writing about Perrine.

Oh, all right.
I've always associated that behaviour with birds on the other side of a pane of glass, but following her gaze when she does that, I can find no birds. I haven't figured out what else she might be K-K-K-K-K-ing at, either.
In my house, growing up, "KKKKKK!" meant "Lookit that!" It was not an idle "Hmm, I see a bird" noise, it meant a "Hey, check out the bird!" My cat and I would stake out opposite sides of the bay window, and bird watch. If either of us saw a bird, we'd notify the other by saying "KKKKKK!" and the other would come look.
To this day, I have found that, when I am approaching an unknown cat, saying "KKKKKK!" gets more positive response than anything else, even up to walking up to me and letting me pet them.
So probably it meant something like "D'Glenn! Timmy's fallen down the well! Let's go watch!"™

*Chuckle* Not with Branwen, our little alley cat. She'll eat most things that I do.

I'm still trying to figure out the way Erica meows--it's different from other kitties I've known. The breathy "Mehh" thing. She can yowl, but it's not her usual meow. She responds to being echoed in the same tone, but the response tends to be a 'sit down and stare at the stupid human blankly' one.
Glad the little love is well, and hope you're the same. Just be careful mixing intelligent cats and rope too much. Those opposable thumbs.

ah well, I can't resist anyway, I am such a cat Mom.
Our cats must be related, so many of the things you mention, I'm sitting here going yeah, Lily does that, yeah, that too...
The KKK sound you mention is pretty common. It has something to do with the hunting instinct, officially I believe it's called chattering. The cat I had before Lily, Midnight used to do the same thing. When Lily does it, I ask her if she is talking to Mr. Squirrel because it is usually at the squirrels outside. Keisha occasionally does it too at the birds, but she is such a wuss, she is terrified of the outside and looking out the window is rare for her. She has gotten better about it since we've had Lily, but...
Lily does the rope game too, she drags it around the house like Linus and his security blanket. We wake up in the morning and there are a dozen toys at the foot of the bed and a few in the bed as well. She brings them up to us in the middle of the night wanting to play. Sometimes she chirrups (she doesn't have a meow, just a little chirp) and wakes me up. Her favorite toy is the mouse on a string, I think I mentioned it before, she carries the mouse around dragging the elastic string and plastic rod behind her. It's really hilarious when she gets the rod stuck under the bathroom door and she grabs the mouse and tries to drag it away and it pulls back, she lets it go and it goes THWAP against the door. She keeps trying and it keeps going thwap. The first time she did this in the middle of the night woke us up and we couldn't figure out what the loud noise was. THWAP... THWAP... until we saw her doing it.
Lily has never used her paws to drink, but Midnight used to. Lily has tried with her paw to get something (imaginary, there was nothing there but water)out of the bottom of a water glass knocking the glass over and spilling the contents. But usually she is very good with her paws.
About scratching inappropriate things... Life is too short to worry about a few claw marks. I am a cat person, I have always had cats, I know that anything I own might get claw marks and cat hair on it. Although we do stop her from clawing things that could hurt her, (fall over on her, make her sick (plants)) Most things we don't care enough about to bother. She is really good about the word "NO". And she understands the phrases, "Not Kitty Place" or "Not kitty toy". And she really does like her cat tree/scratching post, it's one of the floor to ceiling ones, she likes getting all the way up the top and doing the vulture thing looking down at the world. (In fact one of my user pics is her on the top shelf of the scratching post, I set up my tripod on a table and shot the picture at mostly her level.) None of our other cats have used it nearly as much as she has. It's possible that the post you have isn't tall enough or stable enough for Perrine to use it comfortably.
Anyway, enough rambling about my cat...

The word "nifty" was not sarcastic, don't worry. Not a complaint.

add one part rice and two parts water (depending on the variety -- this is what i use for jasmine or plain white rice, but not for basmati) to a pot. cover and cook on high heat until the rice boils. as soon as it does, turn the burner as low as it will go and walk away for 15 minutes. don't uncover it or stir it before the timer goes off. once it has, uncover, stir, and serve.
it's that easy.

Ashley used to do the paw at a glass of water trick. Shed knock it over and it was usualy on the bed. I never could get her to stop that. I've seen cats paw the water in the dish to clear the surface for drinking, but never to lap from their paws. Michi loves nuts, any kind. I first noticed this when she stole cashews from Dennis' chinese food. He was very unhappy about it. She will eat peanuts and loves salted sunflower seeds as well.
Rice: I love to add saffron to mine as it cooks. Yummmy. I have a rice steamer and it takes forever to cook but its easy to use. You might try one of those.
