Onions yes, garlic no. My vet actually told me to sprinkle garlic powder on my cats food when she wouldn't eat. If a cat has a cold or other problems and can't smell the food they wont eat it, the garlic is a stronger scent and cats seem to like it.
Aren't onions and garlic closely related, though? Seems odd that one would be bad and the other good... Sorry, I just tend to lump the two together in my thoughts...
