Funny, I never even saw the show but from your description I figured it out right away.
It comes from the perpetual male insecurity about "measuring up" against other guys. Of course, each of us "measures" differently, so what's obvious to one is mysterious to the other.
What I'm guessing this guy was thinking is this: "My god, she's dated a fscking *celebrity!* Compared to that how am I *ever* going to measure up?! She may like what she sees now, but sooner or later she's going to see that I'm not as good as her Celebrity Lover. Better to bail now than to face the music later... bye!"
Guys have this idea that women are mercenary about sex and relationships; they're holding out for the "best offer". They may like you for now, but if a better offer comes along they'll drop you in a flash. In this case, the hunk feels that she's already *seen* a Really Stupendous Offer. While Hunk may be able to dazzle her for a time, sooner or later he feels that she's going to realize that Fabio was the better offer and go back to him, humiliating Hunk in the process. Better to leave with one's dignity intact now than to face greater humiliation later.
Weird... this is so obvious to me... am I that conventional?
No, you have knowledge of mundane thought processes.
I agree; the mundane view of What Women Want matches this, and it's always baffled me. Which is why Queer Eye for the Straight Guy baffles me, too; sure, I'd love it if teddywolf dressed up a bit more and was less likely to create clutter, but it's not necessary for me to love him, and I'd rather he be comfortable and *himself* than trying to be something he's not.
